How No-Shot, No-Drill Laser Dentistry Works

The idea of a filling without a shot or a drill sounds almost too good to be true. Dr. Brandon Landreth at Carolina Roots Dental in Garner admits he thought the same thing at first, until he looked into the science behind the Solea laser and how it actually works.

A Different Way to Treat a Tooth

The Solea is a CO2 laser. Instead of the mechanical grinding and vibration of a traditional drill, it gently vaporizes decayed tooth structure. There is no spinning bur and no buzzing, which removes two of the sensations patients dread most. Because the laser targets decay precisely, Dr. Landreth is often able to remove less healthy tooth structure along the way, keeping more of your natural tooth intact.

Why It Can Be So Comfortable

Here is the part that surprises people. When a procedure begins, the laser spends about a minute on the chewing surface of the tooth. This works with what dentists call gate control theory: the tooth is gently stimulated, which helps the brain tune out the slower discomfort signals that would normally register. Dr. Landreth compares it to using a push mower for a while and then taking your hands off, when your brain is briefly unsure what it is feeling. The result is that many patients feel little more than a cool sensation, similar to eating ice cream. If it ever feels colder than that, the power settings can be adjusted on the spot.

Do You Still Need to Get Numb?

For the vast majority of everyday procedures, no injection is needed. Simple fillings and many soft-tissue procedures can be done without a shot, and when a little topical numbing gel is helpful for soft-tissue work, it is short acting and still needle-free. For a small number of cases, traditional anesthesia is still the right call, and Dr. Landreth will always tell you up front when that is the case.

What It Means for Your Visit

Skipping the needle changes the whole appointment. There is no waiting for anesthesia to take effect and no numb, droopy feeling for hours afterward. You can finish your filling and head straight back to work or grab lunch on your way out. For patients who have avoided the dentist specifically because of the shot, that difference can be the reason they finally feel ready to come in.

See If It Is Right for You

The Solea is not right for every single procedure, but for a wide range of fillings and soft-tissue treatments it offers a genuinely gentler experience.
